Project: Food Memory Bank: The Museum of Food in America's Oral History Initiative
Needs:
** Materials: Audio recording devices, editing programs/software/programs for pod-casting, putting online, general audio devices (speakers, mikes).
** Staff training, travel expenses to regions of United States
** Translation and transcription services.
** all materials to set up archive, software, archivist staff member
** Promotion, marketing.
Type of Oral History: Personal Interviews, kiosk at museum for instant oral history
What Gap is it filling:
Capturing disappearing food knowledge, culture, memory, creation.
Creating relationships between community and the Museum institution, investment in and through the community.
The stories relate to the larger museum story of community, history, and voice.
Engenders scholarship and research through educating students in oral history collection as well as providing a space for researchers, and students to work with the oral history collection.
Provide Satellite training for students in oral history collection, documentation.
Academic, internship program for this - enriching an a community and academic sphere.
Take photos or related documents to the history if provided.
What we need to ensure:
Institutional and community buy-in, what does it do for the museum and for the community.
That oral history is an on-going process.
collaboration with universities.
Benefits the Museum:
Helps us guide exhibition plans and see what communities are interested or discussing.
Evaluation:
Necessary every year or so, what are the gaps, who are we/or what are we not address? What are the programs, trainings that we could utilize?
What We Are Collecting:
Recipes, Memories, Farm Histories (changes in farming), Ethnic food and its integration, creation of American diet.
Immigrant stories, American restaurants, regional foods, changes, matienence, Food trends, diet, urban growers. Farmers Market
Will target key audiences, partly focused on regional. Be accessible
Time-line: Phases
Large-scale interviews, summer internship. 6 Mths collection, another 6mths of editing, processing. Once museum opens begin visitor collection.
Grant will kick-start the process, process continuous .
